This HBT Shank is an alternative to the traditional mullen, but it has a wide low port that allows the tongue to pass under it comfortably. The port is 1" high and tilted forward at a 45º angle, allowing generous room for the horse’s tongue to elevate and swallow behind the bit but not high enough for palate pressure. When the reins are engaged, the forward tilted port applies pressure primarily to the bars and lip but also applies very mild tongue pressure because of the forward tilt. The sweet iron mouthpiece oxidizes and encourages salivation.
